Chapter Eight

Andy sneezed again and grabbed another tissue. “No, Mom, I’m not sick. This is just allergies. You know me and molds don’t like each other, and since it finally rained, the mold spores are vicious.”

“You should move closer to home,” his mother said.

Andy refrained from pointing out that he was home. His parents, sister and he had all lived in San Antonio. Then his sister had done what she’d done, and his parents had moved to Phoenix, Arizona.

There was no way in hell he was moving to Phoenix. The heat would kill him off—he’d evaporate the first time he stepped outside in summer.

“I have a good job here, and I like San Antonio,” Andy explained. He shouldn’t have bothered.

His mother sniffled. “You like it more than you’d like to be close to your family.”

“Belinda, don’t start on him,” Andy heard his father snap in the background. “He’s a grown man and he has every right to live his own life. If he doesn’t want to be close to us, then that’s his choice. He’s probably too famous for us now anyway.”

Jesus Christ! Double parental guilt, as usual. “Gotta go, Mom. I have a date.”

“Oh? Is he a doctor?” she asked. “Doctors make bad spouses, but they earn a decent income.”

Andy didn’t know what got into him. Maybe he was just tired of his parents’ constant guilt and prodding. “He’s a stripper. He makes great money and will be an incredible husband. I’ll call soon.” He hung up as she gasped with undisguised shock.

Andy was very familiar with that sound from her. It seemed like she’d never approved of him. Neither had his dad. He was too short, too pretty, too gay—they were fine with him being gay, supposedly, just not when he was flamboyant by their standards. That meant no makeup, tight jeans or pink. He liked all three of those things, and he wasn’t giving any of them up for his parents.

And he wasn’t going to date a doctor.

His interests lay elsewhere, like with a certain outdoorsman he’d been dating for three weeks. The heat between them hadn’t lessened any. In fact, he and Kerry were more ravenous for one another than they’d been at first.

Kerry wasn’t running, either, something Andy now trusted he wouldn’t do.

He was nervous about their overnight excursion next week, though. He and Kerry were going on a long hike through the hill country, then camping out before trekking back to civilization. Kerry had assured him that, with the dropping temperatures, bugs and snakes would not be a problem.

He hadn’t said much about mountain lions.

Andy sniffled and grabbed another tissue. As much as he hated to do it, he was going to have to take some allergy meds. They always made him sleepy. There wasn’t any reason for him to stay awake, however, since Kerry was off doing a three-day adventure trip with a group of businesspeople. It was supposed to be a team-building exercise. Andy thought it sounded like hell.

Having Kerry to himself while camping out was a different thing altogether.
